What is padel?

Padel is a form of tennis that is easy to play, fun and extremely sociable. It is played mainly in a doubles format on an enclosed court about a third of the size of a tennis court and can be played in groups of mixed ages and abilities, The rules are broadly the same as tennis, although the serve underhand and the walls are used as part of the game with the ball allowed to bounce off them.One of the fastest growing sports across continental Europe, padel has gained increasing popularity.

The inaugural Essex Tennis Padel Championships were held on Sunday 24 September at Brentwood Padel Club, organised by our Essex Tennis Padel Officer Will Bailes. 32 players, in 8 teams, competed, including both dedicated padel clubs and tennis clubs, and we were blessed with fine weather and some fabulous match play Padel. The teams involved were:

Padel4All Garons Park (Southend)

Rayleigh LTC

DL Chigwell

Westcliff Lawn LTC

Stratford Park Padel Centre

Brentwood A

Brentwood B

Cranston Park LTC

Two leagues were drawn up and each team played a round robin of three matches, winner in each match being first to 8 games. The top 2 teams from each league then played in semi-finals, which saw Padel4All Southend and Brentwood B winning through to the Final after semi-final wins against Cranston Park and Brentwood A respectively. After a really tight Final, Brentwood B emerged as winners, and the first to lift the inaugural trophy, with Padel4All Southend very worthy runners-up.

Everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed the experience of playing padel against other clubs in a team format and there was a great turn out of spectators to cheer the teams on and enjoy the summer sunshine and busy BBQ service provide by our host club.
