Essex Mens 55s team played Surrey in a shoot-out to decide which County qualified for finals day in the Seniors County Cup. Essex had won all three of their matches 5-0 led by captain Richard Stephens (centre) who is pictured with team players Chris Harris, Simon Chesher, John Caddies and Peter Mott. The home match played at Deanes on 30th September was well contested and in Round 1 the doubles pairing of John Caddies and Peter Mott won their match but the two singles matches were both lost, the 2nd singles in a final set tie break in which Simon Chesher had a match point. Essex would have qualified for finals day with a 3-2 defeat so needed to win just one of the 2nd round doubles matches to reach finals day. Sadly it was not to be – Surrey won the match 4-1 and move onto finals day. Fine margins indeed.”
